Professional Journey

Somer trained as an electrical engineer at the Technion, Israel Institute of Technology, graduating Summa Cum Laude, and built a career in engineering leadership across Israeli technology companies. He was Chief Architect at CoSine Communications from 2000 to 2002, then VP of R&D and General Manager for Israel at Verix from 2003 to 2007, then VP of R&D at Worklight, the enterprise mobile software company, from 2007 to 2010. From 2010 to 2013 he was SVP of Engineering and Operations and General Manager for Israel at GreenRoad Technologies, a driver behavior and fleet safety business.

That sequence gave him deep experience in exactly the disciplines AngelSense would need: mobile software, connected devices, location and sensor data, and the operational business of manufacturing and supporting hardware in the field. What turned it toward assistive technology was personal — his own family’s experience with autism.

The specific insight behind AngelSense is that tracking a person with autism is a different problem from tracking a phone or a car. A child who wanders may not be able to say where they are, may not respond to a stranger, and may remove or damage an unfamiliar device. Standard consumer trackers, built for keys and luggage and commuters, fail on all three counts. AngelSense built a wearable with a tamper-resistant attachment designed to stay on, a two-way speakerphone that auto-answers so a caregiver can hear the surrounding environment and speak to whoever is nearby, and an alerting model built around the patterns of an actual wandering incident rather than simple geofence crossings.

Founded in 2013 and based in Petah Tikva, Israel, the company has grown to 51-100 employees with Series A backing from O.G. Venture Partners, selling principally to families and to schools and care organizations. Somer has continued to lead it as CEO, with the product’s development shaped throughout by the constituency it was built for.
