Professional Journey

Shrotri trained as an engineer and did graduate research on multi-agent based intelligent software systems – distributed systems in which independent software agents coordinate to solve problems – with project work involving the Environmental Protection Agency and DARPA. He subsequently took an MBA at Columbia Business School, adding a commercial layer to a technical foundation.

His first industry work was in consulting. At Sprint Communications in Kansas City he worked as a software consultant on the Local Number Portability System, the infrastructure that allows US telephone subscribers to keep their numbers when switching carriers – a large, regulation-driven data integration problem. He then consulted at Ernst & Young in New York, serving clients in the telecom, media and networks sector.

The move into law came through operations rather than software. He founded and ran Lexvia Inc., which grew into one of the more extensive civil litigation support services businesses in the United States, supplying plaintiff law firms with information management, remote paralegal support and full case management services. Running Lexvia meant working inside the day-to-day mechanics of plaintiff practice at scale across many firms, which is an unusually direct way to learn where the workflow actually breaks.

CloudLex followed from that experience, founded with Sudhir Shrotri, who brought a financial background including management of a $500 million hedge fund portfolio at Credit Suisse Asset Management focused on emerging market growth and distressed restructuring. The company describes itself as built by a mix of technology professionals and personal injury attorneys, and positions its product – branded the Legal Cloud – as next-generation infrastructure for injury practice rather than another general-purpose practice management tool.
