Joyner earned a bachelor’s degree in finance at the Rawls College of Business at Texas Tech University. He began his career at Aetna in 1986 as an employee benefit representative and joined Caremark Prescription Services in 1993.

He held a series of roles at CVS Health and its predecessors, including Executive Vice President of Sales and Account Services at CVS Caremark, through December 2019. From 2020 to 2023 he advised health care companies, including the wellness technology company gWell and the diabetic foot care company Podimetrics.

In January 2023 he returned to CVS Health as Executive Vice President and President of Pharmacy Services, running its pharmacy benefit manager, CVS Caremark. In October 2024 he became President and Chief Executive Officer, and on 1 January 2026 he also became Chair of the Board.

For the second quarter of 2026 CVS reported revenues of $106.1 billion and raised its full-year earnings and cash flow guidance. Joyner said the company’s businesses were working together “to deliver a technology-powered care engagement experience”. He has served on the advisory council of Texas Tech’s Rawls College of Business since July 2020.
