Executive Summary
David Benigson is the founder and chief executive of Signal AI, a risk and reputation intelligence company headquartered in London and New York. He started it in 2013 with Miguel Martinez in a garage in north London, with an idea drawn from his parents’ executive search business: that the manual work of reading and tracking what the world was saying about companies and people could be automated. Thirteen years on, Signal AI describes itself as serving more than 800 customers from four global offices, and in 2025 it took a $165 million growth-equity investment in which Battery Ventures acquired a majority stake. Benigson stayed on as CEO through that change of control.

Professional Journey
Benigson trained in law, and Signal AI’s own account of him describes a law graduate “with vision beyond the courtroom”. The company’s origin was domestic: his parents ran an executive search business whose research was slow and manual, and he saw that much of it could be automated. In 2013 he and Miguel Martinez founded Signal AI in a garage in north London.
The product that grew from that idea applies AI to unstructured information — news, broadcast, social media, regulatory sources — to surface risks and reputational issues that executives would otherwise miss. Funding followed a conventional venture path. Frontline Ventures led a seed round in 2015, MMC Ventures and Hearst Ventures led the Series A in 2017, and Highland Europe led a Series D in 2021. The company opened a New York office in 2018 and a Hong Kong office in 2019, launched its AIQ technology in 2020, and in 2023 opened an office in Lisbon as a centre of excellence.
From 2022 Benigson added growth by acquisition: Kelp, a corporate reputation measurement tool for C-suites, in 2022; Social 360, a social media intelligence business, in 2024; and in 2026 Memo, which provides readership data directly from publishers. In 2025 the company released Ask AIQ, which it describes as an AI agent for risk and reputation intelligence.
In September 2025 Signal AI announced a $165 million growth-equity investment led by Battery Ventures, under which Battery took a majority stake and two of its investors joined the board. Benigson framed it in terms of the company’s beginnings: “Our AI platform started in a garage, and evolved to power the world’s most complex enterprises.” He continued as CEO, and in 2026 rebuilt part of the senior team around him, appointing Thor Mitchell as Chief Product & Technology Officer. Recent releases have pushed Signal AI’s data into other companies’ AI tools, including an MCP connector and an integration with Microsoft 365 Copilot.
