Executive Summary
Craig Unger is the founder and chief executive of Hyperproof, a Bellevue, Washington company that sells governance, risk and compliance (GRC) software. The company’s origin story is a familiar complaint in security teams: preparing for high-stakes audits with nothing but spreadsheets and email. Hyperproof automates the work of proving compliance across more than 160 frameworks, from SOC 2 and ISO 27001 to CMMC and FedRAMP. Unger started it in 2018 after roughly three decades building software, including leading development of Microsoft Dynamics and Access at Microsoft and helping found Azuqua, which Okta acquired in 2019. Hyperproof raised a $40 million growth round led by Riverwood Capital in 2023, and in 2025 it launched Hyperproof AI.

Professional Journey
Unger’s career began in packaged business software at Microsoft. Hyperproof’s biography says he led development of Microsoft Dynamics, the company’s line of business applications, and Microsoft Access, its desktop database. The biography gives no dates for his time there.
He was then involved in founding Azuqua, a Bellevue company incorporated in 2010 that built a no-code, cloud-based platform for automating workflows between applications. Azuqua’s 2013 Form D lists him as a director, alongside Nikhil Hasija as president and CEO. Okta bought the company outright in March 2019. Its quarterly filing records $44.2 million of cash consideration, net of cash acquired, and attributes most of the goodwill to Azuqua’s assembled workforce.
Hyperproof was incorporated in Washington in 2018 and raised its first outside money that October, about $1.75 million, followed by a SAFE round of about $3.6 million at the end of 2020. The problem it set out to solve was the manual labour of compliance. Companies selling to enterprises and governments must repeatedly show auditors and customers that their controls exist and work, and that evidence usually lives in spreadsheets, shared drives and email threads. Hyperproof maps controls across frameworks so evidence gathered once can satisfy several standards. It has since added risk management, audit, third-party risk and policy management.
A 2021 Series A brought total funding to $26.5 million. By 2022 the company had grown from roughly a dozen founding employees to more than 100 people across 30 states. In August 2023 Unger announced a $40 million growth investment led by Riverwood Capital, with Toba Capital returning. In the same announcement he wrote that the customer base had grown by almost 140%, without stating the period. In September 2025 Hyperproof launched Hyperproof AI, which applies AI across the GRC lifecycle while keeping people in the loop. Customers named in its materials include Reddit, Fortinet, Appian, Outreach and Thales.
