Executive Summary

Chris Ezekiel founded Creative Virtual in London in November 2003 and has run it ever since, which makes him something close to a unique case in conversational AI: a founder who has led the same company through the entire arc of the technology, from scripted virtual agents through statistical natural-language processing to large language models, without selling, pivoting or being displaced. The company he built sells V-Person, an enterprise virtual agent and chatbot platform, and V-Studio, the orchestration and management layer that sits above it — a division of the product that reflects his consistent thesis that the hard problem in conversational AI is not the model but the governance of what the model is allowed to say. That view looked conservative for most of the 2010s and looks prescient now. Creative Virtual signed its first enterprise customer in 2004 and still serves it, operates from six offices across the UK, USA, India, Australia, Germany and Singapore, and works in more than forty languages across over twenty-three countries, with customers including HSBC, BT, Lloyds Banking Group, Chase, Age UK and Rest. Along the way the company has collected a Gartner Cool Vendor designation and a Queen’s Award for Enterprise.

Professional Journey

Ezekiel’s career began on the engineering side. He worked for a US software company in a sequence of roles that took him across the whole of a technology business: first as a software engineer, then as research and development manager, then as sales and marketing director. Neither Creative Virtual nor any other source reviewed names that employer, but the trajectory matters more than the name — it is the reason he describes himself as having a technical, sales and marketing background rather than one or the other, and it explains why the company he later founded was commercially disciplined from the start rather than a research project in search of a market.

He moved into virtual assistants in 2000, at the tail of the first wave of interest in the technology. That wave largely collapsed. The systems of the period were brittle keyword matchers dressed up as conversation, the hardware could not support anything better, and most of the companies attempting it did not survive the dot-com contraction. Ezekiel’s judgement was that the category was right and the timing was wrong, and in November 2003 he founded Creative Virtual in London to build it properly.

The first enterprise customer arrived in 2004 — and is still a customer more than two decades later, which is the single most telling fact about how the company operates. Creative Virtual grew on enterprise retention rather than on funding rounds, and Ezekiel’s product strategy followed from that. V-Person, the customer-facing virtual agent, was always sold alongside what became V-Portal and is now V-Studio: the tooling that lets a bank’s compliance team see, control and audit what the virtual agent says. In a market that spent years selling conversational novelty, Creative Virtual sold controllability. HSBC, BT, Lloyds Banking Group, Chase, Age UK, Rest, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology and Wilhelm.tel are among the organisations that bought it.

Recognition followed in the second half of the 2010s. Gartner named the company a Cool Vendor in Smart Machines in 2015. In 2017 it won The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise: Innovation, the UK’s most senior business award, and in the same year Ezekiel oversaw the acquisition of Open Water LLC — trading as Creative Virtual USA — bringing the American operation fully into the group. Frost & Sullivan named it an AI-Enhanced Customer Self-Service Product Leader in 2019, ISG placed it as a Conversational AI Leader in its Provider Lens in 2021, and AIxOutlook named it an Innovation Excellence Leader in 2022. The company now runs six offices — UK, USA, India, Australia, Germany and Singapore — with a separate APAC chief executive, and delivers in more than forty languages.

The arrival of large language models from 2022 onward reframed rather than invalidated the position Ezekiel had spent twenty years building. Generative systems solved fluency, which Creative Virtual had never claimed to lead on, and made acute the problem of hallucination and control, which is precisely what V-Studio existed to manage. He has spent the period since as an active public voice on that argument — speaking at industry events internationally, appearing at Web Summit Qatar, writing for trade outlets and giving interviews on what two decades in the field teach about longevity in a market that reinvents its vocabulary every few years.
