Professional Journey

Paulsen earned a Bachelor of Science in Economics at the United States Military Academy at West Point and an MBA at Vanderbilt University. He spent nine years at The Home Depot in leadership and merchandising roles. In 2015 he moved to HD Supply, where he held several leadership positions including chief operating officer until 2021.

In April 2021 he became chief executive of Rexel USA and ran it until December 2023. He then became CEO, North America for Rentokil Initial plc, serving from December 2023 to February 2025.

Floor & Decor announced his appointment as President in January 2025. He joined on 10 March 2025, after the previous President retired at the start of that month. When the company made the announcement, Tom Taylor, then CEO, said Paulsen’s understanding of home improvement, merchandising, retail and commercial sales, and supply chain operations would be particularly valuable. As President he oversaw stores, merchandising, supply chain, customer experience and human resources.

In October 2025 the board named him Chief Executive Officer and a director, effective 26 December 2025. Taylor became Executive Chair to concentrate on long-term strategy and the company’s plan to grow toward 500 warehouse stores. In its 2026 proxy the company said the split lets the executive chair focus on strategic initiatives while Paulsen focuses on day-to-day operations. He took over after a year of difficult conditions for home improvement: in fiscal 2025 Floor & Decor opened 20 warehouse stores and grew net sales 5.1% to $4.68 billion. In his first half-year as CEO the company reported second-quarter fiscal 2026 net sales of $1.25 billion, up 3.0%, while comparable store sales fell 2.1%. It ended that quarter with 281 warehouse stores. He said demand for larger discretionary flooring projects remained uneven but had improved through the quarter.
