Professional Journey

Gill studied computer science and engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, and went on to a graduate degree at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He began his career as a programmer and spent part of it at IBM, where he has said he learned his most important leadership lesson working alongside what he called iconic leaders.

He then spent eight years at Nutanix, the hyperconverged infrastructure company, where he served as Chief Architect and eventually CTO of Cloud Services. That work sat at the core of enterprise infrastructure, and it also gave him a close view of how much operational work inside large companies still depended on scripts and manual processes.

In January 2021 he left Nutanix to start Kognitos, which had been incorporated the previous year. The founding idea was that people should not have to think like machines now that machines can increasingly understand people — that plain English could be the programming language for business automation, turning the knowledge buried in standard operating procedures and runbooks into executable, auditable processes. The company lists Khosla Ventures, Clear Ventures, Fin Capital and Engineering Capital among its backers, and SEC filings show it raising about $20M in 2023.

In June 2025 Kognitos launched what it describes as the industry’s first neurosymbolic AI platform for business operations, combining symbolic reasoning with modern AI so that automations follow processes exactly rather than improvising. A patented Process Refinement Engine updates automations as people correct and handle exceptions, keeping the documented process current. Alongside the launch it raised a $25M Series B led by Prosperity7 Ventures, with Khosla Ventures, Wipro Ventures, Engineering Capital, Dentsu Ventures and Alumni Ventures, to push into banking and healthcare. “The era of brittle automation and unpredictable AI is over,” Gill said at the time. The company is headquartered in Mountain View, California, with teams across North America, Europe and India.
