Alex Babin is founder and CEO of HerculesAI, which brands itself simply as Hercules, an applied-AI company that converts rules-heavy, document-bound workflows into auditable data flows for regulated enterprises. Founded as Zero Systems and built first around legal billing compliance, the business sold its entire legal technology portfolio to Aderant in August 2025 and now concentrates on order-to-cash automation for staffing, insurance, financial services and government customers.

Executive Summary

Alex Babin is founder and chief executive of HerculesAI, which trades under the brand Hercules. The company builds AI agents for work that is rules-heavy and document-bound — capturing data from whatever source it arrives in, mapping it to a company or industry standard, and validating every field against the contracts and policies that govern it. Babin started the business as Zero Systems, aimed at billing compliance and decision intelligence for law firms, and grew it to serve roughly a third of the largest U.S. law firms. In August 2025 he sold that entire legal portfolio to Aderant and redirected the remaining company at the same problem in other regulated industries: order-to-cash automation for staffing, insurance, financial services and government.

Career Highlights

  • Founded the company as Zero Systems in 2017, focused on automating professional-services work in the legal industry (TechCrunch, July 2024).
  • Raised a $26 million Series B and rebranded the business from Zero to Hercules.
  • Built a client base covering roughly 30 percent of the top 100 U.S. law firms, alongside Fortune 500 customers including Mercer, Standard & Poor’s and State Farm, with about 75 employees as of mid-2024.
  • Negotiated the sale of the company’s legal technology assets — the Apollo, Athena and Verify products and the engineering and support staff behind them — to Aderant under a definitive agreement announced 7 August 2025.
  • Repositioned the remaining company around order-to-cash automation, with the platform now handling more than 32,000 contracts and 11 million records a year and deployable in under a month on top of existing ERP, ATS, VMS and payroll systems.
  • Completed a U.S. Department of Defense SBIR Phase I in 2026.

Professional Journey

Babin founded Zero Systems in 2017 to automate professional-services work, starting with the legal industry. The bet that defined the company came several years before the market caught up with it: the team began building small language models, in the range of 500 million to two billion parameters, around 2020, running them on edge devices so that compliance-sensitive clients could keep data in place. Babin has described pitching the idea to CIOs roughly eight or nine months before ChatGPT and finding that no one cared.

The legal business worked. Rebranded HerculesAI, it raised a $26 million Series B, grew roughly fourfold year over year, and reached about 30 percent of the largest hundred American law firms along with Fortune 500 customers in insurance and financial services. That success is also what made it sellable. On 7 August 2025 Aderant, a law-firm business management software provider, signed a definitive agreement to acquire the whole legal technology portfolio — the Apollo, Athena and Verify products together with the team behind them — to fold into its work-to-cash platform and its MADDI virtual associate. Babin is quoted in the announcement saying each of the legal products fitted naturally into Aderant’s portfolio.

What he kept was the underlying approach, and in his own subsequent letter as CEO he framed the divestiture as validation rather than an exit, and as the thing that funded a larger ambition. The company now sells into staffing, insurance, financial services and government — industries where, as the letter puts it, financial precision is not optional. The current product line addresses the order-to-cash cycle in staffing specifically: reconciling timesheets, pay, billing and collections against the contracts that govern them, and closing the gap between when work is done and when the collection clock actually starts. The platform is SOC 2 Type II certified and deployable in the customer’s own cloud or on premises, and the company has offices in Europe, the United Kingdom and Canada alongside its California base.
