Havens earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics at the University of Rochester and an MBA in International Business at San Diego State University. He joined Ryder in 1993 as a rental representative in San Diego and spent his early years in the rental organization, working as a rental manager at several locations.

From there he moved into regional management in the western United States, as asset manager for the west region, general manager for San Francisco and later head of operations for the west region. He also served as vice president of asset management and vehicle sales, the function that manages Ryder’s fleet and sells its used trucks. In September 2011 he became vice president and general manager of Fleet Management Solutions in Canada, and in November 2012 he was named senior vice president and global chief of operations for the FMS business, a role he held for almost nine years.

In May 2021 Ryder promoted him to president of Fleet Management Solutions, succeeding John Diez, who became chief financial officer. The appointment put him on Ryder’s executive leadership team. Fleet Management Solutions provides full-service leasing, contract maintenance and commercial rental of trucks, tractors and trailers to customers of all sizes, and he is responsible for all of its operations. Ryder names him among its executive officers in its annual report and among its named executive officers in its 2026 proxy statement, in which part of his annual incentive is tied to the FMS division’s earnings and revenue.
