Professional Journey
Lou studied computer science at Tsinghua University, taking both a bachelor’s degree and a PhD there. In the same period he built a reputation as one of the strongest competitive programmers of his generation, twice winning Google Code Jam and collecting medals in TopCoder competitions over sixteen years.
He joined Alphabet as an engineer in 2012 and stayed until 2016, moving into Google’s autonomous driving unit in his final year. Pony AI’s annual report also records time at Quora and at Baidu, where he was recognized as the youngest Principal Engineer; the filing does not date those roles.
In 2016 he co-founded Pony.ai with James Peng (Dr. Jun Peng), a former Google engineer and Chief Architect of Baidu’s autonomous driving unit. Peng became Chairman and Chief Executive Officer and Lou Chief Technology Officer, a split the company still reports. Pony.ai began in Silicon Valley and now has its principal executive offices in Guangzhou’s Nansha District. Its business covers robotaxi services, robotruck services, and licensing and applications. Toyota is among its shareholders.
The company’s American Depositary Shares began trading on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the symbol PONY on 27 November 2024. Its Class A shares followed on the Main Board of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on 6 November 2025. Pony AI has a dual-class structure, and Lou and Peng together own all of its Class B shares. As of March 2026 Lou held 4.9% of total shares and 18.1% of voting power.
As CTO, Lou is the public face of Pony.ai’s technical work. In April 2026 he discussed in a trade-press interview PonyWorld 2.0, an upgrade to the company’s world model and the reinforcement-learning training system behind its driving stack. He has said the company began building that system in 2020.
