Professional Journey

Dave’ immigrated from India in 1970, and the company describes him as an industrial engineer. In the company’s 2020 account of its founding he describes working at a manufacturing company and noticing that custom soft goods production was falling behind: “Mass produced items could be delivered in time but customized items lagged behind.” Small custom shops had long lead times, used old machinery and sometimes swapped materials without asking the customer. His idea was to put custom design and manufacturing under one roof.

The company’s June 2026 account of its early years, written in the founder’s voice, gives a harder version of the start. In 1985 he was out of work and could not find a job, so he decided to create one. With help from an SBA loan, a City of St. Petersburg loan, family and friends, he raised about $165,000. He used it to buy a soft goods manufacturing company in New Jersey that was going out of business, moving six trailer loads of old machinery, raw materials and unfinished customer jobs. The business began as AGORA Leather Products with one designer, one plant manager and five plant employees. It took low-bid volume work to get going and ran seven days a week, with the aim of becoming profitable within a couple of years. ISO certification followed.

Over the next four decades AGORA moved from leather goods into engineered soft goods for demanding markets: medical and healthcare, fire and industrial safety, enterprise mobility, Auto ID and point-of-sale. It organised that work into two brands, UltimaCase for mobile computing and device protection and Vistari for medical demo cases and healthcare applications. It also opened an office in Taipei. Its capabilities now include rapid prototyping, pattern engineering, 3D printing, laser cutting, RF welding and injection moulding, and it has worked on pneumatic upper-body, lower-body and full-body exoskeletons for industrial, medical and military use.

In November 2024 AGORA opened a 48,000-square-foot headquarters and manufacturing facility on 5.4 acres in St. Petersburg, with room to add another 32,000 square feet. Pinellas County contributed $1.72 million through its Employment Sites Program, funded by the Penny for Pinellas sales tax, and the expansion created 50 local jobs. At the ribbon-cutting Dave’ credited the company’s growth to vertical integration and a focus on quality, and to putting employees and customers ahead of maximising profit. “If it was easy, everybody would do it,” he said. “Hard is what makes it great.”
