Executive Summary

Steve Jackson is Chief Revenue Officer of GHX, the healthcare supply chain network that sits between hospitals and the companies that supply them, where he owns sales, customer success, customer adoption and go-to-market operations. He is one of the relatively few revenue leaders in health technology who has run a company rather than only a sales organisation: he was President of National Research Corporation from 2015 to 2020, during which GHX says its market capitalisation grew from $350 million to more than $1.5 billion, and before that spent seven years as chief strategy officer at Vocera Communications. Almost his entire career, going back to Stockamp & Associates in the late 1990s, has been spent on the same problem from different angles — making the business side of healthcare work better without degrading the clinical side.

Career Highlights

  • Chief Revenue Officer of GHX since 2020, responsible for sales, customer success, customer adoption and go-to-market operations across a network connecting more than 18,000 provider facilities, over 4,100 hospitals and 18,000 supplier divisions.
  • Promoted to President of National Research Corporation on 1 October 2015, having joined as National Research Group President in October 2014.
  • Credited by GHX with growing NRC’s market capitalisation from $350M to more than $1.5B, with employee and customer satisfaction scores more than doubling during his tenure.
  • Chief Strategy Officer of Vocera Communications from 2007 to 2014, and Chief Operating Officer of its ExperiaHealth subsidiary.
  • Held positions of increasing responsibility earlier at The Advisory Board Company, Neoforma and Stockamp & Associates.
  • Has served as a board member and strategic advisor to several startup companies.
  • Graduated with honors from the University of California, Davis with a B.S. in managerial economics.

Professional Journey

Jackson read managerial economics at the University of California, Davis, graduating with honors, and began in healthcare consulting and health technology — Stockamp & Associates, then Neoforma, then The Advisory Board Company, in roles of increasing responsibility. By 2015 his employer described him as having spent the previous eighteen years working with academic medical centres, health systems, community hospitals and children’s hospitals on their strategic, operational, financial and clinical problems, which places the start of his career around 1997.

From 2007 to 2014 he was at Vocera Communications, the clinical communications company, as Chief Strategy Officer, and also served as Chief Operating Officer of ExperiaHealth, a Vocera subsidiary focused on patient and staff experience. That combination — corporate strategy at the parent and operating responsibility at a subsidiary — is a useful apprenticeship for running a company, and he did so next.

He joined National Research Corporation in October 2014 as National Research Group President, overseeing its Market Insights, Reputation and Predictive Analytics business units. A year later, on 1 October 2015, the company announced his promotion to President. Founder and chief executive Michael D. Hays framed the appointment around continuity and change at once: Jackson’s leadership would “ensure we preserve our strong heritage while embracing the changing needs of our customers”, and his vision to unify the company’s brand, position and products would have far-reaching benefits. That unification is what NRC became known for over the following years as NRC Health.

He remained President through the end of the decade — he opened the company’s 2019 fourth-quarter and year-end earnings call in February 2020, reporting more than $100 million of contract value on NRC’s Voice of the Customer platform and naming Partners Healthcare, Allina Health and Beaumont Health among the health systems that had signed in the final quarter. GHX credits his tenure at NRC with taking market capitalisation from $350 million to more than $1.5 billion, and with more than doubling both employee and customer satisfaction scores.

Later in 2020 he moved to GHX as Chief Revenue Officer. GHX was founded in 2000 and has built one of the largest cloud-based supply chain networks in healthcare: more than 18,000 provider facilities including over 4,100 hospitals, more than 18,000 supplier divisions, 1.3 million trading partner connections, and over $223 billion of annual supply chain transactional volume, with the company reporting $2.2 billion of industry savings in the last year. His remit covers not only sales but customer success and adoption — a deliberate pairing in a network business, where the product only delivers value if both sides of a trading relationship actually use it, and where a signed contract with low adoption is worse than no contract at all.

He has also served as a board member and strategic advisor to several startup companies.
