Professional Journey
McKernan studied systems engineering at the University of Pennsylvania. His early career was in commercial and operational roles across three electronics companies: Oki Electric, Philips Electronics and American Power Conversion.
He then spent more than twenty years as a senior executive with Schneider Electric, a global company focused on industrial automation and energy management. Intervala’s biography of him says he most recently served there as president of one of the company’s most rapidly growing global business units, and credits him with a record of profitable growth, portfolio expansion and building teams known for customer satisfaction.
In February 2025 Intervala announced that Teresa Huber, who had led the company for about nine years, would move into a strategic advisor role, and that McKernan had been named president and CEO. The company’s chairman, John Hathaway, pointed to his more than 20 years of senior executive leadership in industrial technology and his experience building high-performance teams. McKernan said his immediate priority was a seamless transition for customers, and both he and Huber remained on the board.
Intervala is a full-service electronics manufacturing services provider with its headquarters and manufacturing campus in Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania, covering printed circuit board assembly, electromechanical systems, and cable and harness builds. Under McKernan it invested more than $6 million in advanced manufacturing technology, automation and facility expansion, completing a 60,000-square-foot build-out and installing automated storage and retrieval systems that freed about 40,000 square feet more. McKernan tied the investment to rising product complexity in AI-driven data center expansion and next-generation defense and medical systems, arguing that manufacturing readiness has become as critical as design innovation. In a September 2026 trade interview he noted that he came to electronics manufacturing services new to the industry, with a perspective from both sides of the manufacturer and OEM relationship.
