Professional Journey
Chesnutt studied business administration at The Citadel and later earned an MBA at Harvard Business School. From 1992 to 1995 he held line management positions at Lithonia Lighting, now Acuity Brands Lighting.
He then spent most of two decades running middle-market companies for their owners. From 1995 to 2000 he was a portfolio company President for Brynwood Partners, a private equity firm that invests in middle-market consumer goods and manufacturing businesses. From 2001 to 2008 he was President and Chief Operating Officer of The Betco Corporation, a manufacturer and marketer of specialty chemicals and equipment. Prime says Betco grew significantly during that period, both organically and through acquisitions.
Prime Technological Services was founded in 1989 and was bought in April 2007 by Covey Equity, which invests in mid-size manufacturers. Chesnutt joined Prime’s board as an advisor in January 2008 and became President and CEO in June 2009. Under Covey’s ownership Prime has invested in automated placement and inspection equipment, lean manufacturing and quality systems. It holds ISO 9001, AS9100 and ISO 13485 certifications and is ITAR-registered, which lets it serve defense and medical customers. By 2016 it had been named to the Inc. 5000 list of fast-growing private companies four years in a row.
In January 2020 Prime acquired TeligentEMS, which added radio-frequency manufacturing and test capability. A month later it bought I Technical Services, an Alpharetta, Georgia provider of circuit board assemblies and box builds founded in 2003. Chesnutt said the ITS deal gave Prime “additional manufacturing and service capacity, expansion of our customer base into additional geographic and vertical markets” along with greater scale and diversification. Prime now certifies manufacturing sites in both Georgia and Florida.
Alongside his role at Prime he is an Operating Partner at Covey Equity. Prime’s biography also lists him as a member of the Young Presidents Organization, its Electronics Industry Network and the Atlanta CEO Council.
