Professional Journey
Born on 1 March 1965, Bäte served in the German Air Force in 1986-87 before studying business administration at the University of Cologne and taking an MBA at New York University’s Leonard N. Stern School of Business. He began his career at McKinsey & Company in New York and later transferred to the firm’s German offices. In 1998 he took over McKinsey’s insurance practice for Germany and Austria, and in 2003 was named a Director of the firm’s European insurance and asset management practice.
In 2008 he joined the Board of Management of Allianz SE as Global Chief Operating Officer, moving to Chief Financial Officer in September 2009. In January 2013 he took on responsibility for Allianz’s Insurance Western & Southern Europe and Global P&C Markets businesses, giving him operating as well as finance experience across the group. He was named the company’s next CEO in October 2014 and took office in May 2015, succeeding Michael Diekmann, and added responsibility for human resources shortly afterwards.
As CEO he has pushed the group on sustainability and on diversity measurement, co-founding the UN-convened Net-Zero Asset Owner Alliance and taking Allianz to the top of BeyondGenderAgenda’s German Diversity Index. In October 2023 the supervisory board renewed and extended his mandate through the 2028 Annual Shareholders Meeting, in the same announcement that confirmed Claire-Marie Coste-Lepoutre as Chief Financial Officer from 1 January 2024. He sits on the board of directors of the cyber insurance specialist Coalition, chairs the Pan-European Insurance Forum, and is Vice Chairman of the Geneva Association; he is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the Munich Security Conference, the Trilateral Commission and the Institute of International Finance.
