Professional Journey

Lo was born in Singapore and grew up across Southeast Asia, a background that gave him early familiarity with how differently commerce works across the region’s markets. He studied finance and information systems management at the University of New South Wales in Australia, then began his career in management consulting at the Boston Consulting Group. He went on to earn an MBA from the University of California, Berkeley’s Haas School of Business, and in 2014 joined Amazon through its Retail Leadership Development program.

He co-founded Xendit in 2015 with Tessa Wijaya, Bo Chen, and Juan Gonzalez, and the company was accepted into Y Combinator’s Summer 2015 batch — a notable placement at the time, when very few Indonesian companies had gone through a top US accelerator. The problem Xendit set out to solve was that Indonesian digital commerce was being held back by payments rather than by demand. Card penetration was low, bank transfers were manual and slow to reconcile, and any business wanting to accept money online had to build integrations against a patchwork of local banks, e-wallets, and convenience-store payment networks, each with its own interface.

Xendit’s answer was to absorb that complexity into a single API, so a merchant could integrate once and reach the full range of local payment methods, with reconciliation handled automatically. The company began with a narrower product and pivoted into a full payment gateway as it became clear that the infrastructure layer, not the consumer-facing application, was where the durable business lay. That positioning made it a piece of core infrastructure for Indonesian e-commerce, and it expanded into the Philippines and other regional markets on the same model.

The company reached unicorn valuation in 2021, with reported total funding of around $530 million, and Lo has been recognized on Forbes 30 Under 30 and the CNBC Upstart 100, while Xendit received The Asian Banker’s Best Payments Initiative award.
