Executive Summary

Luca Martinetti is co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of TrueLayer, the London company that runs a Pay by Bank network, letting people pay merchants and receive payouts directly from their bank accounts over open-banking connections rather than by card. He founded it in 2016 with Francesco Simoneschi, a friend from school in Rome who is its CEO, and has been responsible for its technology since the start. TrueLayer now reports almost 30 million users and more than $150 billion in annualised payment volume across 22 countries, with merchants including Amazon, eBay, Trading 212 and Ryanair, and in 2026 it completed the acquisition of the Nordic Pay by Bank provider Zimpler.

Career Highlights

  • Co-founder and CTO of TrueLayer, quoted in that role in the company’s March 2026 announcement completing the Zimpler acquisition.
  • Director of TrueLayer Limited from its incorporation in July 2016 until January 2025, and a director of TrueLayer Group Holdings Limited since March 2020, according to Companies House.
  • Built TrueLayer’s platform as a software engineer before becoming CTO, as he described in a 2021 interview.
  • TrueLayer was selected in July 2026 for the Financial Conduct Authority’s Supercharged Sandbox to test agentic payments.

Professional Journey

Martinetti and Simoneschi met at school in Rome. In July 2016 they incorporated the company that became TrueLayer in London. Martinetti took the technical side. In a 2021 interview with Verdict he described himself as a co-founder first, one who had taken it upon himself to look after the technology, and as having been a software engineer before he was CTO.

TrueLayer’s business is a payments network built on bank transfers, which it says lets businesses onboard users, accept payments and process payouts at scale. The company operates across the UK and Europe and describes itself as Europe’s leading Pay by Bank network.

Recent growth has come partly through acquisition. TrueLayer completed its purchase of Zimpler, a Pay by Bank provider in the Nordics, in March 2026, and Martinetti presented the deal as extending the network at a point when Pay by Bank adoption was accelerating across Europe. In July 2026 the company was selected for the FCA’s Supercharged Sandbox to test agentic payments.
