Professional Journey
Matheos studied Accounting and Information Systems at Virginia Tech and began his career at Ernst & Young. Dragos describes him as having then served in finance leadership roles at large public technology companies before Appian.
He joined Appian Corporation in October 2016 as Vice President, Assistant Controller. He became Vice President, Corporate Controller in April 2017 and Senior Vice President, Global Corporate Controller in January 2021. When CFO Mark Lynch announced his retirement in December 2021, Appian’s board named Matheos Chief Accounting Officer and principal accounting officer, effective 31 December 2021. On 1 April 2022 he succeeded Lynch as Chief Financial Officer, taking on the principal financial officer role while keeping the principal accounting officer responsibilities. Dragos credits him with overseeing Appian’s growth from 500 employees to more than 2,000 and helping steer the company through its IPO process.
In October 2024 he told Appian he would leave, effective 8 November 2024, to take a CFO role at another company. Dragos announced him as its Chief Financial Officer on 19 November 2024, alongside Mark Packham as Chief Marketing Officer and the move of Darren Sankbeil, the previous CFO, to Chief Strategy Officer. “Dragos is in an exciting, fast-growing market, has an undeniably strong company culture, and most importantly, a mission so clearly important that I am honored to be a part of it,” he said at the time.
Dragos was co-founded by Robert M. Lee, who leads it as Chairman and CEO, and serves operators in electric power, oil and gas, manufacturing, water, transportation, mining and government. By late 2024 it had raised more than $384 million, including a $200 million Series D. In September 2026 it announced that it had acquired NetRise and runZero, describing the combination as an end-to-end platform for what it calls xOT security.
