Frichtl studied at Stanford University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in engineering physics and a Master of Science in mechanical engineering. In July 2013 he joined Quanergy as an engineer. In June 2015 he co-founded Ouster with Angus Pacala, who is now its CEO, and took the Chief Technology Officer role, which he still holds. Ouster designs and makes digital lidar sensors that give 3D vision to machinery, vehicles, robots and fixed infrastructure. The company went public in March 2021 by combining with Colonnade Acquisition Corp., a Cayman Islands blank-check company that then became Ouster, Inc., a Delaware corporation. In February 2023 Ouster completed a merger with Velodyne Lidar, which added Velodyne’s scanning sensors to its range. In October 2021 it had acquired Sense Photonics, a solid-state flash lidar developer whose technology supports Ouster’s DF sensor. On 4 February 2026 it acquired Stereolabs SAS, adding AI camera vision and perception products.

Ouster’s annual report for 2025 shows total revenue of $169.4 million, up from $111.1 million in 2024. The 2025 figure includes $22.8 million of royalties.
