Farney earned a bachelor’s degree at Illinois State University and an MBA at the University of Michigan. He joined State Farm in 1993 and held roles including assistant vice president for securities products, assistant vice president for planning and analysis, vice president of financial operations and operations vice president for underwriting.

In January 2016 he was named Senior Vice President, Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer. On 1 January 2024 he succeeded Michael Tipsord as President of State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company, and in March 2024 the board selected him as the next Chief Executive Officer, effective 1 June 2024.

As President and Chief Executive Officer he runs the company’s business operations and is a member of the State Farm Mutual board.
