Professional Journey

Rooney’s career has been in operations in the UK aerospace supply chain. Before Nasmyth he held senior operational positions at Hampson Aerospace and then at Gardner Aerospace, both suppliers of precision parts and assemblies to aircraft and engine makers.

Nasmyth appointed him Chief Operating Officer in February 2023, reporting to chief executive Tony Upton. At the time the group ran precision engineering and metal treatment businesses across nine sites, serving both new production and the aftermarket. Rooney described the role as working across those businesses “as we enter a significant period of growth”. The group’s corporate structure changed within months of his arrival. The original Nasmyth Group Limited, set up in 2003, entered administration in May 2023 and was renamed, and a holding company incorporated in December 2022 took the Nasmyth Group Limited name. Companies House records Rooney as a director of that holding company from September 2024, days after Upton stepped down from its board.

By November 2025 Rooney was chief executive. On 3 November 2025 Nasmyth announced it had been acquired by Sigma Advanced Systems UK Ltd, part of a group listed in India that designs and makes avionics, naval systems, radars and other defence equipment. Rooney said Sigma’s strategy “aligns perfectly with our vision for growth” and that the company was already investing in its facilities to add capability and capacity.

The following months turned Nasmyth into the UK half of a UK-India manufacturing model. In June 2026 Nasmyth reported that it had set up a new facility in Sri City, India, and passed its AS9100D quality audits there in May, to deliver a previously announced Rolls-Royce contract worth about GBP 300m. In July 2026 Sigma agreed to buy Bromford Precision Solutions, a Leicestershire maker of aero-engine rings, casings and structural parts, to work alongside Nasmyth. In August it announced a further Rolls-Royce long-term agreement worth nearly GBP 125m through Bromford. Commenting on the August agreement, Rooney called it “a strong signal of confidence in UK manufacturing jobs”.
