Professional Journey
Morgan grew up on a corn and soybean farm in LeRoy, Illinois, where his family still runs a large row-crop farming operation and a trucking business. He started his career at John Deere Company, and in May 2002 he became its territory manager for southeastern North Carolina. That job put him in regular contact with the region’s independent John Deere dealers.
In November 2004 he left John Deere and bought a minority stake in one of those dealers, Quality Farm Equipment. John and Butch Howard had founded it in Clinton, North Carolina, in 1989. Morgan and Rick Thigpen joined when P&L Tractor of Goldsboro merged into it, which gave the business two stores. A third store in Wallace followed in March 2006. In November 2007 Quality Farm Equipment merged with E&E Farm Equipment, Revels Turf and Tractor, D&L Equipment and Harnett Tractor to form the original Quality Equipment, LLC. In March 2008 Morgan set up Morgan Investments to hold his additional ownership interests in the combined company.
The group grew by merger again on 1 October 2018, when Quality Equipment’s 14 locations combined with the 13 of East Coast Equipment. East Coast Equipment was itself a roll-up of family dealerships in eastern North Carolina and southeastern Virginia. Since then the company has named Morgan, CEO Bryan Dobson and CFO Stan Bowers as its management. It has kept adding stores, opening in Pittsboro in 2021 and Seaboard in 2022, acquiring Wilmington Lawn and Leisure, and buying the assets of Southeast Farm Equipment in Laurinburg in December 2022. Besides John Deere it sells STIHL and Honda power equipment and a long list of short-line farm equipment brands.
The company says Morgan has chosen to spend more than 20 years in the equipment business because of his connection to agriculture, and that he identifies with the goals of its agricultural and commercial customers.
