Professional Journey
Bultema’s career before Brightspot ran through digital media. In a 2022 company interview he said he had worked with Kami Ragsdale at two earlier companies, AOL and a company called Envision. When Ragsdale, then Brightspot’s CFO, told him about an opening there, he took it “because I trusted Kami and enjoyed working with her.” Brightspot does not publish the titles he held at those employers.
He joined Brightspot as Vice President of Finance and Operations and had been with the company about three years at the time of the October 2022 interview. By then he had succeeded Ragsdale as Chief Financial Officer. He credits her, COO Alfred Garcia and David Gang with his development into the role.
As CFO he describes himself as responsible for “all things financial.” That covers monthly accounting and annually audited financial statements, and a financial planning and analysis function that forecasts revenue, expenses and cash and compares them with budget. He names forecasting as the hardest part of the job. His team also produces the Monthly Operating Review presented to the board each month. His remit reaches beyond core finance to a data analytics team working mainly with sales and marketing, and to review of professional services project performance with the COO.
Brightspot’s current leadership page still lists him as Chief Financial Officer on the executive team led by CEO Raleigh McClayton. Outside work he has said he enjoys sport, including the Washington Capitals, hiking and the outdoors.
