Executive Summary
Courtney Powell is Chief Operating Officer and Managing Partner at 500 Global, the venture capital firm and startup accelerator that has backed more than two thousand companies across offices in dozens of countries. She has run the firm’s global operations since July 2019, and her route into the job is unusual for an operating partner: she first encountered 500 as one of its own portfolio founders, going through the accelerator in 2012 with a consumer-complaints startup, then spent the intervening years building and selling companies in real estate technology before returning to the other side of the table. That founder-first background shapes how she talks about the firm’s mandate, which is explicitly about capital reaching entrepreneurs outside the traditional Silicon Valley orbit.

Professional Journey
Powell studied French and corporate communication at the University of Texas at Austin, and began her working life outside technology before founding her first company. In 2012 she started PublikDemand, which tackled a familiar consumer frustration with a structural answer: individual complaints against a large company are easy to ignore, but aggregated and made public they are not. The product used Twilio’s SMS and voice infrastructure to let customers band together and escalate, and the underlying idea was that community, not persistence, is what gets a response. PublikDemand joined 500 Startups’ Global Accelerator Program in Batch 4 that year, and the work brought her a place on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list in 2012 and a Twilio Doer Award in 2013.
She moved next into real estate technology, becoming Chief Executive Officer of Agent Pronto, a referral service matching consumers with real estate agents and among the largest of its kind in North America. The company was acquired by Fidelity National Title Group, giving her the founder-to-exit experience that is the usual prerequisite for the seat she later took at 500. A Google Business Leader recognition followed in 2015.
From 2017 to 2019 she was Head of Corporate Development at Keller Williams Realty, then the world’s largest real estate franchise by agent count. The remit was to build the innovation function the company had not previously had: she established its first corporate innovation programme and worked alongside Keller Capital, the firm’s investment arm, on technology acquisitions and investments in the real estate sector. It was a corporate role but a founder’s problem, which is figuring out how a very large incumbent acquires and absorbs new technology without smothering it.
In July 2019 she returned to 500 Startups, since rebranded 500 Global, as Chief Operating Officer, later adding the Managing Partner title. At the time of her appointment the firm managed over 500 million dollars across 21 funds and had invested in more than 2,200 companies from offices in 20 countries, and her mandate was to make an organisation of that geographic spread operate as one firm. In announcing the move she pointed to her own experience building companies away from the coastal hubs, framing the firm’s thesis in a phrase she has repeated since: talent exists everywhere, but opportunity does not. Alongside the operating role she serves on the advisory council of Harvard Kennedy School’s Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government, and speaks regularly at venture and policy events including the Milken Institute Global Conference, where her 2026 appearance was on investment in African growth markets.
