Executive Summary

Conor McCarthy is Chief Financial Officer of MariaDB, the company behind the open-source relational database created by the original developers of MySQL. He was appointed in April 2023, when MariaDB was a newly listed public company on the New York Stock Exchange. He then spent a difficult year and a half as its finance chief, through restructuring, a change of chief executive and an unsolicited takeover. That ended with the company’s acquisition by an affiliate of K1 Investment Management and its delisting in August 2024. He remains CFO of the private company. A chartered accountant trained at KPMG in Ireland, he has spent more than three decades in finance roles, mostly as CFO, at brokerage, fintech and technology companies.

  • Appointed Chief Financial Officer of MariaDB plc effective 10 April 2023; also listed as Corporate Secretary in the company’s January 2024 filing.
  • Signed MariaDB’s 2024 filings as CFO through the Meridian BidCo takeover, the NYSE delisting and the September 2024 SEC deregistration; still listed as CFO on the company’s leadership page.
  • CFO of Nasdaq-listed Ideanomics, an electric vehicle company, from September 2019 to September 2022.
  • CFO of OS33 (2018–2019), Intent (2016–2018) and Convergex Group (2014–2015).
  • CFO and Finance Director of the Americas at NYSE-listed GFI Group, a wholesale broker now part of BGC Partners, from 2005 to 2014.
  • Chartered Accountant, Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland.

Professional Journey

McCarthy began his career as an auditor with KPMG in Ireland. He moved into financial services and worked as CFO, treasurer and in other senior finance roles at trading and brokerage firms.

His longest recent tenure was at GFI Group, the NYSE-listed wholesale money broker that is now part of BGC Partners. He was Chief Financial Officer and Finance Director of the Americas there from March 2005 to June 2014. He then served as CFO of Convergex Group, an equity brokerage, from June 2014 to July 2015. After that his career turned toward technology. He was CFO of Intent, a data science and advertising technology firm, from May 2016 to July 2018. He then spent a year as CFO of OS33, a fintech software platform for the wealth management industry.

In September 2019 he became CFO of Ideanomics, a Nasdaq-listed company in the electric vehicle industry, and held the post until September 2022. MariaDB says his work there included building the revenue models for its vehicle-as-a-service and charging-as-a-service products.

MariaDB’s board appointed him CFO in April 2023, a few months after the company became public through a business combination. The next eighteen months were turbulent. The company cut its workforce in October 2023, brought in an FTI Consulting restructuring officer in March 2024 and decided not to renew its chief executive’s contract. In April 2024 an affiliate of K1 Investment Management bought the company’s secured debt. K1’s Meridian BidCo then made an unsolicited cash offer, which it settled in July 2024 for nearly 89% of the shares, and it compulsorily acquired the remainder in August. McCarthy signed the company’s filings throughout, including the September 2024 notice ending its SEC registration.

He remains Chief Financial Officer under CEO Rohit de Souza, according to MariaDB’s leadership page. Since going private the company has continued to make acquisitions, completing a purchase of GridGain in March 2026.
