Professional Journey
Genially began with a question the founders kept running into in their earlier work: how to make conventional slide presentations more engaging. As El País told it in 2020, the three partners set out to build a content-management tool that anyone could use to make interactive microsites, with no knowledge of code or design needed. The first beta was paid for with ten thousand euros, which the newspaper described as a year of Roldán’s salary. Between May and September 2015, 4,000 people registered, and the tool reached 100,000 users about seven months later.
The company grew from there. By 2020 it had offices in Córdoba, Málaga and Madrid, had added one in New York, and counted Telefónica, Santillana, Porsche, Danone and Michelin among its users. Its growth sped up during the pandemic, as schools moved online and daily sign-ups rose sharply. In August 2023 The Objective reported 30 million users, EUR 26.2 million raised and more than 160 jobs created, with Roldán listed as CTO and co-founder.
Genially marked its tenth anniversary in December 2025. In the post it published for the occasion, the company named Roldán as one of its three founders, with Juan Rubio as CEO and Luis García as CPO, and reported more than 40 million creators and a team of over 140. Earlier that year, when Genially relaunched its brand, he spoke as its CTO about interactivity bringing people back to “the connection between people”. As technical lead he has also spoken publicly about how the engineering team monitors the real-time editor that sits at the centre of the product.
