Most of his career has been spent as CFO, and often also COO, of growth-stage technology companies. The best documented of these is BlackSky, the geospatial intelligence company whose finances and operations he ran from 2019 until it listed on the New York Stock Exchange by merger in September 2021.

Professional Journey

Daum trained as an accountant, earning a BS in Accounting at Lehigh University and qualifying as a Certified Public Accountant. According to BlackSky’s merger filings, his early senior roles were CFO and COO of Arc Second and CFO of Centrifuge Systems. Babel Street describes his background as two decades in growth-stage software and technology companies, with a focus on financial operations and building out SaaS organisations.

From January 2013 to May 2017 he was CFO and COO of Savi Technology, which sells real-time supply chain visibility software and sensors. He then spent June 2017 to October 2018 as CFO of Motionsoft, a SaaS and payments processing business.

In February 2019 he became CFO and COO of BlackSky, the geospatial intelligence company, and in October 2020 he also became its Secretary. BlackSky became a public company through a merger with Osprey Technology Acquisition Corp., a special purpose acquisition company, which closed in September 2021. The filing announcing the completed merger lists Daum as Chief Financial Officer, and he signed it. The succession had been arranged in advance. Under a transition agreement signed in August 2021, he resigned as CFO on 16 September 2021, the day after closing, and Johan Broekhuysen took over. BlackSky’s filing stated that the resignation did not result from any disagreement with the company. Daum stayed on as a senior adviser until the end of November 2021 and then consulted for the company during the handover.

Babel Street named him CFO on 14 April 2022, the same day it named Michael Southworth chief executive. At the time Daum said he was “eager to roll up my sleeves and get started.” Babel Street says it was founded in 2009. It collects and analyses multilingual data at scale for identity and vendor vetting, situational awareness and threat intelligence. The company’s leadership has since changed around him: its leadership page now names Benji Hutchinson as chief executive and John Larson as President and Chief AI Officer, and still lists Daum as Chief Financial Officer.
