Executive Summary

Bill Atlee is the founder and Chief Innovation Officer of iPipeline, a provider of cloud-based software for the life insurance, annuity and wealth management industries, now a business unit of Roper Technologies. He built it from the agent’s side of the desk: an insurance agent in Philadelphia who had personally sold more than 6,000 life policies, he founded iPipeline in 1995 out of frustration with the paperwork, having already started an automated term insurance quoting brokerage three years earlier. In his current role he is responsible for developing new products and shaping how they go to market.

Career Highlights

  • Founded Direct Quote America, Inc. in 1992, a nationally licensed brokerage that developed one of the industry’s first automated term insurance shopping services.
  • Founded iPipeline in 1995, creating what the company describes as the first multi-carrier network where distributors and agents could get quotes, check underwriting status, compare products and complete electronic applications.
  • Listed as an executive officer of Internet Pipeline Inc in its January 2012 Form D filing for a roughly $71.4 million offering.
  • Continues as Chief Innovation Officer following iPipeline’s acquisition by Roper Technologies in 2019.

Professional Journey

Atlee earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration and finance from Westminster College and began his career selling life insurance, eventually selling more than 6,000 policies himself. That experience set the direction for the rest of his career. In 1992 he founded Direct Quote America, Inc., a nationally licensed brokerage that built one of the industry’s first automated services for shopping term insurance.

In 1995 he founded iPipeline. The company traces its origin to his frustration with excessive paperwork as a Philadelphia agent, and to an early product called LifePipe, “a single, comprehensive up-to-date source of reference for insurance forms.” iPipeline grew into a multi-carrier network through which distributors and agents could quote, track underwriting, compare products and submit applications electronically. It acquired COSS Development Corporation in 2009 for the iGO e-App, which became its signature product, and recorded its millionth iGO submission in 2013. SEC records show Internet Pipeline Inc, based in Exton, Pennsylvania, raising about $71.4 million in a private offering in January 2012 with Atlee among its named executive officers.

Roper Technologies acquired iPipeline in 2019. The company has since added the iPipeline Evolve platform and annuity tracking tools, and operates in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. Atlee remains on its executive team as Chief Innovation Officer, charged with developing new products, making sure innovations deliver clear value to customers, and building go-to-market strategies around customer needs and industry pain points. The company notes his habit of explaining complicated industry problems through stick-figure drawings.
