Executive Summary
Ahmed Rubaie is Chief Executive Officer of Anomali, the Redwood City threat intelligence company that has repositioned itself as an AI-native security operations platform. He was appointed CEO and a director by Anomali’s board effective March 1, 2021, arriving not from a security engineering background but from the finance chair of a string of enterprise software companies — Ariba, Fortinet and Sitecore — each of which he helped carry through a transition: a recession, a global expansion, a sale. That pattern is the through-line of his career, and it is the reason Anomali’s board recruited him. His mandate has been to take a company known for threat intelligence feeds and rebuild it around automated, AI-driven security operations.
Career Highlights
- Appointed Chief Executive Officer and board member of Anomali effective March 1, 2021, per the company’s own board announcement.
- Led Anomali’s transformation from a threat intelligence vendor into an AI-native security operations platform.
- Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Ariba from 2008, through the company’s recovery from the 2008 recession and its October 2012 acquisition by SAP for 4.3 billion dollars.
- Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer of Fortinet during a period of rapid global expansion.
- Appointed Chief Financial Officer of Sitecore in March 2014, part of the leadership team through the growth phase preceding the company’s 1.2 billion dollar sale to EQT.
- Adjunct Professor at Santa Clara University’s Leavey School of Business, teaching Contemporary Business Issues; recipient of the university’s Outstanding Career Influencer Award.
Professional Journey
Rubaie’s early career was spent in senior operating roles at large publicly traded manufacturing and natural resources companies, a background that shaped a finance practice oriented around operations rather than reporting. He moved into enterprise software in 2008, joining Ariba as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer at the worst possible moment — the financial crisis — and staying through the company’s recovery. Ariba’s cloud spend-management business grew past 400 million dollars in revenue and was acquired by SAP for 4.3 billion dollars in October 2012.
From Ariba he went to Fortinet, taking the combined Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer role during the network security company’s rapid international expansion. The dual mandate is characteristic: he has repeatedly taken finance titles that carry operational authority rather than staying inside the treasury function.
In March 2014 Sitecore appointed him Chief Financial Officer, and he was part of the leadership team through the growth transformation that preceded the digital experience company’s 1.2 billion dollar sale to EQT. That sequence — three enterprise software companies, three transitions, two of them ending in major exits — is what Anomali’s board hired in 2021.
At Anomali he inherited a company with a strong reputation in threat intelligence and a market that was moving underneath it, as security teams shifted from consuming intelligence feeds to automating the operations built on top of them. His tenure has been defined by that repositioning toward an AI-native security operations platform. Alongside the CEO role he teaches Contemporary Business Issues as an adjunct professor at Santa Clara University’s Leavey School of Business, and is an active investor and board participant in cybersecurity.
