DeVeydt earned a B.S. in business administration at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. He became a partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers, focusing on the national managed care and insurance industries.

In March 2005 he joined Anthem as Senior Vice President and Chief Accounting Officer, for part of that time also serving as chief of staff to the chairman. In May 2007 he became Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, a role he held until May 2016.

In January 2017 he became a senior advisor to the global healthcare division of Bain Capital Private Equity. In January 2018 he became chief executive of Surgery Partners, a Bain-backed operator of surgical facilities and ancillary services, and in January 2020 its Executive Chairman. From March 2022 he was also a managing director at Bain Capital. He served on the boards of Centene and, earlier, Myovant Sciences, NiSource and Grupo NotreDame Intermédica.

In July 2025 UnitedHealth Group announced him as its next CFO. He left the Centene and Surgery Partners boards at the start of August and took up the role on 2 September 2025, succeeding John Rex, who became strategic advisor to the chief executive. In the second quarter of 2026 UnitedHealth reported revenues of $112.0 billion and raised its full-year adjusted earnings outlook.
