Executive Summary

Vaibhav Taneja has been Chief Financial Officer of Tesla since August 2023, when he succeeded Zachary Kirkhorn while keeping his role as chief accounting officer. He came to Tesla through its 2016 acquisition of SolarCity, where he had been corporate controller, and rose through Tesla’s accounting function as assistant controller, corporate controller and, from 2019, chief accounting officer. Before that he spent nearly 17 years at PricewaterhouseCoopers in India and the United States, finishing as a senior manager in its assurance practice. His route to the finance chief’s job ran entirely through audit and accounting, and through a company Tesla bought, rather than through financial planning or banking.

Professional Journey

Taneja earned a Bachelor of Commerce at Delhi University and qualified as a certified public accountant, a credential Tesla now lists as inactive. He worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers in India and the United States from July 1999 to March 2016, most recently as a senior manager in its assurance practice, according to Tesla’s 2019 filing.

In March 2016 he joined SolarCity, the solar installer chaired by Elon Musk, as a vice president in its accounting functions, and became its corporate controller in August 2016. Tesla acquired SolarCity in November 2016, and in February 2017 he became Tesla’s assistant corporate controller.

He was promoted to corporate controller in May 2018 and appointed chief accounting officer on 13 March 2019, the same day Tesla named Zachary Kirkhorn its chief financial officer. On 4 August 2023 Kirkhorn stepped down and Tesla appointed Taneja CFO in addition to his chief accounting role.

As CFO he is one of only three executive officers Tesla lists, alongside Elon Musk and Tom Zhu, and he signs the company’s filings as chief financial officer. Tesla publishes no executive biographies, so his public record beyond these filings is limited.
