Executive Summary
Tom Lofland is a grocery executive who retired in July 2026 as President of Jewel-Osco, the Chicago-area supermarket banner of Albertsons Companies, after a career of more than 35 years that began at Albertsons in 1990. Most of that career was spent in merchandising and in running regional divisions: he led Albertsons’ Eastern Division and then its Mid-Atlantic Division before taking over Jewel-Osco in August 2025, a move that came out of a wider reshuffle of the company’s merchandising leadership. His tenure at Jewel-Osco was brief, lasting less than a year.
Career Highlights
- President of Jewel-Osco, which operates 189 stores with more than 32,000 associates in Illinois, Indiana and Iowa, from August 2025 until his retirement in July 2026.
- President of Albertsons’ Mid-Atlantic Division before moving to Jewel-Osco.
- Earlier President of the Eastern Division and Senior Vice President of Merchandising and Marketing.
- Vice President of Merchandising and Marketing for Safeway’s Eastern Division, and Vice President of Center Store for Albertsons’ Intermountain West Division.
Professional Journey
Lofland began his grocery career with Albertsons in 1990. At various points he also worked at Supervalu and at K-VA-T Food Stores, but most of his career was spent inside what became Albertsons Companies.
His early leadership roles were in merchandising. He was Vice President of Center Store for Albertsons’ Intermountain West Division, the part of the business that covers the packaged and shelf-stable goods in the middle of a supermarket. He was later Vice President of Merchandising and Marketing for Safeway’s Eastern Division. He went on to lead the Eastern Division as its president, then held the post of Senior Vice President of Merchandising and Marketing, and later became President of the Mid-Atlantic Division.
In August 2025 Albertsons rearranged its merchandising leadership. Mark Laryea, who had been running Jewel-Osco, was promoted to president of merchandising for the company, and Lofland moved from the Mid-Atlantic to succeed him at Jewel-Osco, with Sean Thompson taking the Mid-Atlantic role. Jewel-Osco, founded in 1899, is one of the company’s largest regional banners, operating 189 stores across Illinois, Indiana and Iowa.
In July 2026 Jewel-Osco announced his retirement, and Albertsons confirmed it to the trade press. The company’s announcement said he had “led with vision, integrity and an unwavering commitment to people,” and it recognised him as an Army veteran and a mentor.
