Professional Journey

Fountain’s career began on the founding side of network security, as a co-founder of Ingrian Networks, a company later acquired by SafeNet. He also spent time on the Stanford faculty teaching electrical engineering and computer science, and as a Principal at the Mayfield Fund — a combination of operating, academic and investing perspectives that is unusual in an operations chief.

He then moved into large-company strategy and general management at Juniper Networks, where he served as Vice President of Corporate Strategy and ran the Content and Media Business Unit as its General Manager. From Juniper he went to McAfee as Senior Vice President of Strategy and Corporate Development, the role he held immediately before F5.

F5 recruited him in January 2018 as Executive Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer. The mandate was corporate development in the broadest sense — mergers and acquisitions, business development, technology partnerships and new business incubation — and the results were consequential. In September 2024 F5 restructured its senior team, promoting Fountain to Chief Operating Officer with a mandate to drive execution, productivity and efficiency across the company while keeping Global Services, and at the same time promoting Chad Whalen to Chief Revenue Officer and Kunal Anand to Chief Technology and AI Officer. He remains in the role at the time of this review, with insider filings through August 2026 confirming him as a serving F5 officer.
