Executive Summary

Tom Ewers leads the mergers and acquisitions practice at West Monroe, the digital and management consulting firm where he has spent essentially his entire career. The practice works the whole arc of a transaction for private equity and corporate buyers — technology and operational diligence before the deal, integration planning at close, and the transformation work that determines whether the thesis actually materialises afterwards. It is a demanding position in a crowded market, and what distinguishes his standing in it is that he has built things inside his own firm repeatedly: he opened West Monroe’s Minneapolis office in 2013, ran its Central region, launched its Consumer and Industrial Products practice in 2018, and was named its first-ever Chief Revenue Officer in 2022. Each of those was a start-from-nothing assignment, which is a useful qualification for advising companies on the hardest part of an acquisition, namely making two organisations actually work as one.

Professional Journey

Ewers took a B.S. at Miami University in Ohio and started his career at Arthur Andersen, delivering technology solutions to large organisations — the classic apprenticeship of that era’s consulting profession, and one that ended abruptly for a generation of consultants when the firm collapsed in 2002. He joined West Monroe that same year, when it was still a small Chicago-based firm, and has stayed for more than two decades.

His contribution has consistently taken the form of building new things inside the firm rather than managing existing ones. In 2013 he opened West Monroe’s Minneapolis office, establishing the firm in a new market from scratch, and went on to lead its Central region. In 2018 he launched the Consumer and Industrial Products practice, giving the firm a dedicated sector capability where it had previously worked opportunistically.

In December 2021 West Monroe announced that Ewers would become its first Chief Revenue Officer, effective 2 January 2022. The brief was structural rather than ceremonial: build a Revenue Growth team that brought sales, client service, delivery success and quality into a single aligned function, on the argument that in professional services these are not separable activities — what is sold and what is delivered have to be the same thing. He continued overseeing the Minneapolis office alongside the new role. The firm made a parallel appointment at the same time, moving its chief marketing officer Casey Foss into a new Chief Commercial Officer role.

He subsequently took over West Monroe’s mergers and acquisitions practice as Managing Partner. The practice serves private equity sponsors and corporate acquirers, and the work spans the full transaction lifecycle rather than a single phase — which suits someone whose own record is about what happens after the announcement, in the unglamorous business of making a plan real. Outside the firm he sits on the board of the Farmer School of Business at Miami University, coaches hockey through the winter, and spends his summers wakesurfing on Lake Minnetonka.
