Professional Journey

Reed read engineering and applied science at the California Institute of Technology and spent the long first phase of his career at Green Hills Software, one of the two or three companies that matter in safety-critical embedded systems software. What distinguishes his path there is its breadth: he did not stay on one side of the house. He worked in engineering on real-time operating systems, hypervisors and compiler toolchains, then in professional services — the part of the business that gets a customer’s certification evidence through an aviation or automotive safety authority — and then in sales and channel management, before reaching Senior Vice President of the Advanced Products division and the executive leadership team.

That combination is rare and it is precisely what the embedded safety market demands, because the product, the certification artefacts and the sale are inseparable. A customer buying a hypervisor for a flight control system is buying a decade of documented evidence as much as a piece of software.

In June 2022 OceanSound Partners acquired Lynx Software Technologies and appointed Reed chief executive. The transition was unusually significant for the company: he replaced Gurjot Singh, who had joined Lynx in 1992 and run it since 2008, and who remained on the board as a strategic adviser on corporate initiatives and customer relationships. Reed has described his own arrival plainly as a consequence of the acquisition.

Since then he has led Lynx around the argument that the same virtualisation and separation technology that isolates flight-critical workloads is what allows modern edge systems to consolidate multiple functions safely onto shared hardware — the trend pulling aerospace, defence, automotive and industrial computing in the same direction. He sits on the Lynx board alongside Chief Strategy and Product Officer Michel Genard, and leads a management team spanning revenue, finance, technology, engineering and professional services.
