Schmitt earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a major in accounting at the University of Louisville and an MBA at Indiana University Southeast. He began his career at UPS, where he spent more than a decade, according to his PepsiCo biography.

From 2006 to 2016 he held a variety of roles at Yum! Brands, the restaurant company, where PepsiCo says he developed expertise in quick-service restaurants and the away-from-home business and evaluated long-term strategies and growth opportunities.

He joined Walmart in 2016 in investor relations. He became senior vice president and chief financial officer of Sam’s Club in 2018, CFO of Walmart U.S. eCommerce from 2019 to 2020, executive vice president and CFO of Walmart U.S. Omni-Channel in 2021 and then executive vice president and CFO of Walmart U.S., overseeing finance for the retailer’s largest business unit. PepsiCo credits him with a role in Walmart’s transformation into an omnichannel retailer and with leading cost discipline initiatives.

PepsiCo’s board appointed him executive vice president and chief financial officer on 7 October 2025, effective 10 November 2025. He reports into a leadership team headed by chairman and chief executive Ramon Laguarta, and leads financial planning and analysis, accounting and controllership, mergers and acquisitions, treasury, tax, investor relations and internal audit. PepsiCo’s controller and principal accounting officer, Christine Tammara, is also listed among its executive officers. PepsiCo sells food and beverages in more than 200 countries and territories through six reportable segments and employed about 306,000 people at the end of 2025, according to its annual report.
