Executive Summary

Ryan Spoon is President of Yahoo Media Group, the part of Yahoo that brings together Yahoo Sports, Yahoo Finance and the company’s newer streaming, podcasting and FAST channel businesses. He joined Yahoo in June 2023 as President of Yahoo Sports, reporting to CEO Jim Lanzone, and his remit has since widened from one property to the company’s media portfolio as a whole. He came to Yahoo with an unusually mixed sports-and-digital background: chief operating officer of the fantasy sports platform Sorare and of the sportsbook operator BetMGM, more than eight years running digital at ESPN, and before that venture capital and a founder’s exit of his own.

  • Chief Operating Officer of Sorare, the NFT-based fantasy sports platform, and before that Chief Operating Officer of BetMGM.
  • More than eight years at ESPN, latterly as Senior Vice President of Digital & Social, overseeing digital editorial, performance and strategy.

  • Two-time winner of the Sports Business Journal Forty Under 40 award, in 2018 and 2020.

Professional Journey

Spoon’s career began in consumer internet. From 2003 to 2007 he worked at eBay in internet marketing and social media, and led Kijiji.com, eBay’s classifieds business. He then founded beRecruited, a recruiting platform, which was later acquired.

He moved into venture capital at Polaris Venture Partners, focusing on early-stage technology and consumer investments, and from 2009 to 2012 led Dogpatch Labs. A 2011 SEC filing from that period lists him as a director of the startup ReadyForZero.

He then spent more than eight years at ESPN, where he led digital in several capacities and finished as Senior Vice President of Digital & Social, responsible for digital editorial, performance and strategy. From there he took operating roles at two companies built on sports fans’ willingness to play along: he was Chief Operating Officer of BetMGM, the sportsbook and iGaming operator, and then Chief Operating Officer of Sorare, the NFT-based fantasy sports platform.

Yahoo appointed him President of Yahoo Sports in June 2023, charged with growing what the company described as the internet’s second-ranked sports property and positioning it for a new generation of fans. He now leads Yahoo Media Group, which adds Yahoo Finance and Yahoo’s streaming, podcasting and FAST channel efforts to the sports business. Yahoo describes the job as setting the strategy for its media-heavy properties for a new generation of consumers.
