Professional Journey
Sloan graduated from Queen’s University Belfast and joined Kainos in June 1999 as a trainee software engineer, the same entry route taken a decade earlier by its long-serving chief executive, Brendan Mooney. Kainos was then a small private company; over the following 25 years it listed in London and became an international IT services business operating in more than 20 countries.
He moved through a series of leadership roles and for roughly ten years ran the group’s Digital Services division, which builds and supports digital services for public sector, healthcare and commercial customers. Under his leadership it grew from 35 people to more than 1,600, and Kainos credited him as a major contributor to the design and execution of its strategy.
In June 2023 Kainos announced that Mooney, CEO for 22 years, would step down, and Sloan took over as Chief Executive Officer in September 2023 following the company’s AGM in Belfast, completing a four-year succession plan. He led the group until December 2024, when Mooney returned as CEO and Sloan stepped down. Kainos’s chair thanked him for his contribution over 25 years, saying he had played a key role in the company’s development; Sloan said it had been a privilege to work with so many talented people and that he was proud of what Kainos had delivered for its clients.
In May 2026 Scott Logic announced him as its new Chief Executive Officer, starting on 11 May. The consultancy, founded by Gary Scott and headquartered in Newcastle, employs more than 350 people across six UK offices. Sloan said he was attracted by its reputation for high-quality engineering, its record under private ownership and the agility of a company of its size in a changing market, and by its forward-looking approach to AI. Speaking to Newcastle Helix after his appointment, he argued that successful technology businesses will be defined by adaptability and an understanding of customer needs, and that while AI will play a major role, curiosity, problem-solving and a customer mindset remain the essential skills for the next generation of engineers.
