Executive Summary

Rob Greer is a cybersecurity executive with nearly thirty years in the industry, built across the network security companies that defined successive eras of the field: SonicWALL and Symantec, HP’s TippingPoint intrusion prevention business, Forescout during its run to the public markets, and Broadcom’s Enterprise Security Group, where he inherited the Symantec, Blue Coat, and Carbon Black portfolios after Broadcom bought Symantec’s enterprise business. In January 2025 he became Chief Executive Officer of ExtraHop, the Seattle network detection and response company, succeeding Greg Clark. He no longer holds that role: ExtraHop’s own leadership page now lists Clark as Chairman and CEO, and its blog identifies Greer as a former employee. No announcement of his departure and no subsequent role could be found.

Career Highlights

  • Chief Executive Officer of ExtraHop from January 2025, succeeding Greg Clark, who at that point moved to Executive Chairman.
  • Vice President and General Manager of Broadcom’s Enterprise Security Group, running the Symantec, Blue Coat, and Carbon Black product lines after Broadcom’s acquisition of Symantec’s enterprise security business.
  • Chief Marketing Officer and Senior Vice President of Products at Forescout Technologies, with a pivotal role in its 2017 initial public offering.
  • Operating Partner at Crosspoint Capital Partners, the private equity firm that acquired ExtraHop in a 900 million dollar deal in 2021.
  • Vice President and General Manager of Network Security Products at HP, including the TippingPoint business.
  • Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Ignyte Technology, with earlier leadership roles at Symantec, SonicWALL, and ClearApp.

Professional Journey

Greer took a B.A. in business administration with a concentration in management information systems at San Jose State University and went into network security at a point when the category was still defined by appliances sitting at the perimeter. He held leadership roles at SonicWALL, the firewall company, at Symantec, and at ClearApp, and founded Ignyte Technology, which he led as chief executive.

At HP he became Vice President and General Manager of Network Security Products, a portfolio that included TippingPoint, the intrusion prevention business HP had acquired with 3Com. He moved from there to Forescout Technologies as Chief Marketing Officer and Senior Vice President of Products. Forescout’s product was agentless device visibility and control, which became strategically important as unmanaged and industrial devices proliferated on corporate networks, and Greer’s combined product and marketing remit made him central to the positioning work that carried the company to its initial public offering in 2017.

He then took on the largest portfolio of his career, as Vice President and General Manager of Broadcom’s Enterprise Security Group. Broadcom had bought Symantec’s enterprise security business, and Greer’s responsibility covered the Symantec endpoint and data protection lines, the former Blue Coat web and network security products, and Carbon Black. Running that group meant operating inside Broadcom’s distinctive model of concentrating on the largest customers of a mature portfolio, a very different discipline from growth-stage product leadership.

A period as an Operating Partner at Crosspoint Capital Partners followed. Crosspoint is a private equity firm specialising in cybersecurity, and it had acquired ExtraHop in 2021 in a deal valued at 900 million dollars. That relationship is the bridge to what came next: in January 2025, after ExtraHop reported a record growth year, the company announced Greer as its new Chief Executive Officer, with Greg Clark moving to Executive Chairman. The mandate was to scale the network detection and response platform globally, alongside an expanded executive team.

He did not remain long. ExtraHop’s current leadership page lists Greg Clark as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, and the company’s own blog now describes Greer as a former employee. No press release marking the change appears on ExtraHop’s index, and no subsequent role for Greer could be established from any source consulted. His lapsed Forbes Technology Council listing still carries the ExtraHop title, which is a stale artefact rather than evidence of anything current.
