Executive Summary

RJ Pittman is a technology executive whose career has run through the product organizations of Google, Apple and eBay and then into the chief executive’s chair at Matterport, the spatial-data company that turns physical buildings into navigable digital models. He led Matterport from December 2018, took it public in 2021 and remained chairman and chief executive until CoStar Group’s roughly $1.6 billion acquisition closed in February 2025. Since then his publicly documented position is a board seat: he was elected to the board of Extra Space Storage, the self-storage REIT, in May 2026, nominated explicitly for his experience running large-scale technology businesses and his expertise in artificial intelligence and digital commerce. The thread across all of it is the same problem in different forms - making enormous, messy inventories of physical things findable and transactable, whether those things are web pages, retail SKUs, marketplace listings or rooms.

  • Named to Inman’s Power Players list three years running, 2023 to 2025.

  • Director of product management for search and Google Labs, growing Google’s web search properties to hundreds of millions of users.
  • Co-founder and chief executive of Groxis, whose information-visualization technology was licensed by Google, Yahoo and Amazon; earlier founded startups in the first internet era including the publicly traded Digital Courier Technologies.
  • B.S. in Computer Engineering, University of Michigan; M.S. in Engineering-Economic Systems, Stanford.

Professional Journey

Pittman started as a founder rather than an operator, building technology companies during the first internet boom - among them Digital Courier Technologies, a publicly traded e-commerce and digital payments business - and then Groxis, which he co-founded in 2001 and ran until 2006. Groxis built graphical interfaces for search results, an attempt to solve the readability problem of a ranked list by visualising the relationships between results instead. The technology was licensed by Google, Yahoo and Amazon, which is a fair summary of both the idea’s quality and the difficulty of building a business on it.

He joined Google in 2007 as a director of product management across search and Google Labs, staying until 2010 and growing web search properties to hundreds of millions of users. From 2010 to 2013 he ran Apple’s worldwide e-commerce platform, responsible for the Apple Online Store’s design, product management and commerce systems during the period of iPhone and iPad expansion, and directing the store’s international build-out across 38 countries.

In July 2013 eBay hired him as its first Chief Product Officer, a Senior Vice President role he held for five years. The brief was as broad as the title implies - product, design, engineering and mobile strategy across a marketplace serving more than 124 million active buyers and 25 million sellers - and it came at the point when eBay had to decide what it was in a world where Amazon had won general retail. His answer leaned on structured data and machine learning: making a marketplace of unstructured, individually listed items behave, for the buyer, like a catalogue.

Matterport recruited him as chief executive in December 2018. The company had a hardware-and-software system for capturing buildings as dimensionally accurate 3D models, and a user base concentrated in residential real estate. Pittman’s tenure widened it: into construction, insurance, facilities and retail, and increasingly toward treating the captured model not as a virtual tour but as a data asset. That direction produced Property Intelligence, launched in 2024, which extracted structured property data - square footage, room dimensions, fixtures - from the scans, along with features such as automated defurnishing, auto-measurement and AI-generated property descriptions. In July 2021 the company went public through a merger with Gores Holdings VI and he added the board chairmanship. In February 2025 CoStar Group completed its acquisition of Matterport for roughly $1.6 billion, and his tenure ended with the deal.

In 2026 Extra Space Storage nominated him for its board. The logic is not obscure: a self-storage REIT with thousands of facilities has precisely the digitisation problem he spent six years solving at Matterport, and the proxy cites his AI and digital commerce expertise alongside his public-company leadership record. Shareholders elected him on 14 May 2026.
