Professional Journey
Rothberg earned a bachelor’s degree at New York University and a law degree at Columbia University. He practiced at the law firm Rogers & Wells and was an attorney for IBM Credit Corporation, then spent nearly eight years in senior legal roles at Caterpillar, based in Nashville, Tennessee and Geneva, Switzerland.
He joined Dell in 1999. As vice president of legal for Europe, the Middle East and Africa he supported Dell’s businesses in that region, and in 2008 he moved to Singapore as vice president of legal for Asia-Pacific and Japan.
Returning to the United States in 2010, he became vice president of legal for North America and Latin America, the lead counsel for sales and operations in the Americas and for the enterprise solutions, software and end-user computing business units. He also led Dell’s government affairs organization worldwide.
He was named general counsel in November 2013, the year Dell went private, and has since overseen the legal work of the EMC combination, the relisting and the sales of VMware and SecureWorks by their acquirers. Beyond the legal department he manages government affairs, compliance and ethics, and global security, and he is one of the named executive officers in Dell’s 2026 proxy.
His career has included postings outside the United States, in Geneva for Caterpillar and in Singapore for Dell, before he took charge of the legal function at Dell’s Texas headquarters. As corporate secretary he also supports Dell’s board, which the 2026 proxy shows is chaired by Michael Dell, with Ellen Kullman as lead independent director.
