Professional Journey

Ahuja was born in Rampur, Uttar Pradesh, in 1956, and took all three of his degrees at IIT Kanpur: a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering in 1977, a master’s in industrial and management engineering in 1979, and a doctorate in the same field in 1982, on parametric programming in network flow problems. He joined the IIT Kanpur faculty immediately afterwards and stayed until 1996.

The formative connection of his academic career was with MIT, where he held a visiting position from 1986 to 1998. It was in that period that he co-authored Network Flows: Theory, Algorithms, and Applications, published in 1993, with James Orlin and Thomas Magnanti. The book became the standard reference on network optimisation and has sold more than 20,000 copies; the Lanchester Prize followed the same year. He also spent 1996 to 1997 as a visiting professor at Rutgers University School of Management before joining the University of Florida in 1998 as Professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering, where he later founded the Supply Chain and Logistics Engineering Center.

In 2000 he founded Innovative Scheduling, Inc. as a vehicle for turning that research into products for railroads, airlines and trucking companies. The company grew without the venture funding typical of enterprise software, and in 2014 rebranded as Optym. In 2006 the Daniel H. Wagner Prize recognised the applied side of this work, and in 2017 EY named him an Entrepreneur Of The Year finalist — recognition from the commercial world rather than the academic one.

Optym has since become a family business as well as an academic spin-out: his son, Shaman Ahuja, serves as Deputy CEO, and the two have spoken publicly together about bootstrapping the company and about what eventual succession looks like. Ahuja has continued in his University of Florida professorship throughout.
