Professional Journey

Hatter trained as a mechanical engineer, taking both a BS and an MS at Carnegie Mellon, and began her career in large-scale telecommunications and networking at AT&T Corporation and Cisco Systems. Those years established the pattern that runs through everything since: she operates at the junction of technology and the business processes that consume it, rather than in pure engineering or pure sales.

In 2010 she joined McAfee as Chief Information Officer with the additional remit of Senior Vice President of Operations — an unusual combination, and the one that defined her reputation. Running IT and operations together at a security company meant owning both the internal systems and the operational machinery that delivered the product, through a period in which McAfee was absorbed into Intel. When the business became Intel Security, she took the role of Chief Information Officer and General Manager for Security and Software at Intel Corporation from 2015 to 2016, adding profit-and-loss responsibility to the internal technology remit. She returned to McAfee in 2017, briefly, as General Manager and Senior Vice President of Services and interim CIO during the separation of the business back out of Intel.

From 2019 to 2022 she was Chief Customer Officer at Palo Alto Networks, one of the largest pure-play cybersecurity companies, a role that put the whole post-sale customer relationship — onboarding, success, support, renewal — under one executive. That period also marked the start of her public-company board career: she joined the board of Coherent Corp. in 2019, where she remains, serving on the Nominating and Corporate Governance Committee as a Class Three director. She has also served on the boards of Barrick Gold Corporation, the international mining group, and Qualys, the cloud security and compliance provider.

In May 2023 she joined Opsera, a considerably smaller and earlier-stage company than any of her recent employers, as President and Chief Operating Officer. The move is consistent with her stated motivation — she described supporting organisations building cutting-edge technology as one of her deepest passions, and joined at what the company called a point of rapid growth. At Opsera she works alongside co-founder and CEO Kumar Chivukula, with the operating and commercial side of the business under her, while the company positions its platform around AI-assisted orchestration of software delivery, unified engineering metrics and governance across tools including Databricks and Salesforce.
