Professional Journey

Miels trained as a biologist, taking a Bachelor of Science in Biology at Flinders University in Adelaide and later an MBA at Macquarie University in Sydney. He built his career in the commercial side of the pharmaceutical industry, holding roles of increasing seniority at Sanofi-Aventis and Roche across the United States, Europe and Asia, and going on to serve as head of Asia for Roche, based first in Shanghai and then Singapore. He then moved to AstraZeneca, where he was Executive Vice President of Global Product and Portfolio Strategy, Global Medical Affairs and Corporate Affairs, and subsequently Executive Vice President of the company’s European business.

He joined GSK in 2017 as Chief Commercial Officer, responsible for the worldwide commercial portfolio of medicines and vaccines. Over the following eight years GSK’s centre of gravity shifted markedly toward specialty medicines, with the strongest growth coming from oncology, HIV, and respiratory, immunology and inflammation — the portfolio he was commercially responsible for.
