Executive Summary

Loris Degioanni is the founder and Chief Technology Officer of Sysdig, the cloud security company whose platform grew out of an open source tool he wrote for looking inside running containers at the system-call level. Few security executives have his record in open source: he co-created Wireshark, the network analyzer with more than 20 million users, and went on to create both the sysdig troubleshooting tool and Falco, which became a CNCF runtime threat detection project. He ran Sysdig as CEO from 2013 until 2018, then handed the chief executive role to an outside operator and moved to CTO, where he has stayed through a second CEO change in June 2026.

Career Highlights

  • Founded Sysdig in 2013 to provide deep, system-call-level visibility into containers for developers and defenders.
  • Stepped aside as chief executive in April 2018 when Sysdig appointed Suresh Vasudevan, formerly CEO of Nimble Storage, as president and CEO; became Chief Technology Officer, responsible for company vision and product strategy.
  • Co-created Wireshark, the open source network analyzer, and worked on WinPcap before Sysdig.
  • Created the sysdig open source tool (2014) and the Falco runtime security project (2016).
  • Remains CTO and founder under Hatem Naguib, named Sysdig CEO on 16 June 2026.
  • Holds a PhD in computer engineering from Politecnico di Torino.

Professional Journey

Degioanni earned a PhD in computer engineering at Politecnico di Torino. His name is tied to open source network analysis from the 1990s onwards: he worked on WinPcap, the Windows packet capture library, and co-created Wireshark, which Sysdig says now has more than 20 million users.

In 2013 he founded Sysdig, and its starting point was again open source. The first sysdig tool, released in 2014, was built to inspect containers at the level of system calls, which gave operators a view of what was really running inside them. In 2016 he created Falco, a runtime threat detection engine; Sysdig describes it as the first and only runtime security project accepted by the Cloud Native Computing Foundation. The commercial company grew on top of those projects: Sysdig Secure, a real-time cloud-native security platform, followed in 2017, and the company later moved into eBPF-based drivers, runtime-prioritised vulnerability management, and a cloud-native application protection platform with runtime at its core.

In April 2018, with Sysdig selling what it then called a container intelligence platform, the board appointed Suresh Vasudevan, who had taken Nimble Storage through its IPO and its $1.2 billion sale to Hewlett Packard Enterprise, as president and CEO. Degioanni became Chief Technology Officer, with a remit to “continue to guide the company vision and product strategy”. Announcing the change, he said he looked forward to working with Vasudevan to grow Sysdig and help customers scale, secure and manage their infrastructure.

He has remained CTO since. Sysdig’s recent timeline includes Sysdig Sage, an AI assistant for cloud security work, in 2023; agentic AI for its CNAPP in 2025; and in 2026 a cloud security platform designed to be used by AI agents rather than through dashboards. On 16 June 2026 Sysdig named Hatem Naguib, formerly CEO of Barracuda Networks, as chief executive. Degioanni was quoted in that announcement as founder and CTO, and the company then said it was trusted by more than 60% of the Fortune 500.

He lives in Davis, California.
