Executive Summary

Lisa Roath became Chief Operating Officer of Target in February 2026, taking charge of the parts of the business that physically move and sell the merchandise: more than 2,000 stores, the global supply chain, fulfillment services including Shipt same-day delivery, enterprise services and properties. She has been at Target since 2006, almost entirely on the merchandising and marketing side, most recently running buying for food, essentials and beauty and before that serving as chief marketing officer. That background is the distinctive feature of the appointment: Target handed its store and supply-chain operation to a merchant rather than an operations specialist.

Career Highlights

  • Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Target since 15 February 2026.
  • Chief Merchandising Officer for Food, Essentials and Beauty, January 2025 to February 2026.
  • Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, July 2023 to January 2025.
  • Senior Vice President, Merchandising, Food and Beverage, 2020 to 2023.

Professional Journey

Roath earned a bachelor’s degree at Northwestern University and an MBA at Harvard Business School. Before Target she worked at Limited Brands, the Minneapolis department store Marshall Field’s and the consulting firm L.E.K. Consulting in the United Kingdom.

She joined Target in 2006 and held a run of merchandising roles, leading food and beverage merchandising, essentials merchandising, pricing and promotions, and merchandising transformation and insights. From July 2020 to July 2023 she was senior vice president of food and beverage merchandising.

In July 2023 she became chief marketing officer, responsible for using data, insights and the Target brand to deepen relationships with existing guests and win new ones. In January 2025 she returned to merchandising as chief merchandising officer for food, essentials and beauty, with responsibility for buying across Target’s frequency categories and an end-to-end food business that included its own supply chain, store operations and product development.

Target announced her appointment as chief operating officer on 10 February 2026, effective 15 February, as part of the leadership changes around Michael Fiddelke’s move from COO to chief executive. She now oversees the stores, the supply chain and the fulfillment network, including same-day delivery through Shipt, and works alongside chief merchandising officer Cara Sylvester and chief financial officer Jim Lee.

Her appointment was one of several leadership changes Target disclosed on the same day as it reshaped its top team under the new chief executive. The 8-K announcing it noted that she had been with the company since 2006. Beyond stores and the supply chain, the COO role also covers properties and enterprise services, the functions that sit behind the store network.
