Professional Journey

Murphy holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the State University of New York at Albany, according to Progressive. He joined the company as a claims representative in 1992.

During his initial tenure in claims he held various strategy, process and operations roles across the country, including regional claims manager, national implementation leader, claims business leader and physical damage process business leader.

He then spent nearly seven years as president of Customer Relationship Management, the group that runs Progressive’s contact centers for sales and service and its customer experience functions. In December 2021 he became claims president, responsible for all aspects of claims strategy and resolution across all product lines; Lori Niederst succeeded him at Customer Relationship Management.

Progressive’s 10-K says its own employees handle nearly all personal lines vehicle and commercial lines claims, from physical claims offices across the U.S. or virtually, supported by central functions and a network of about 4,700 third-party repair shops, with independent adjusters used opportunistically after catastrophes. Progressive, an insurance holding company in Mayfield Village, Ohio, wrote $83.2 billion of net premiums in 2025, according to its 10-K.

Progressive’s 10-K describes a management team that supports the chief executive in overseeing the business and the corporate functions serving the whole organization: the chief financial, marketing, investment, information, human resources, strategy and legal officers, and the presidents of the personal lines, commercial lines, claims and customer relationship management groups. Murphy has been on it since at least 2021, first leading customer relationship management and then claims.
