Executive Summary

Jim Dolce is Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Lookout, the mobile endpoint security company he has led since March 2014. His recent tenure has been defined less by expansion than by deliberate contraction: having taken Lookout into cloud security through the 2021 acquisition of CipherCloud, he has since sold both the consumer mobile security business to F-Secure in 2023 and the entire cloud security business — the Security Service Edge platform built largely on that CipherCloud foundation — to Fortra in May 2025. What remains is a company concentrated on mobile endpoint security for enterprise and government customers, which is where Dolce has said he sees the strongest opportunity for growth and value creation. He is an experienced networking and security executive of more than three decades, having founded four technology companies and held senior operating roles at Akamai Technologies and Juniper Networks, the latter through a period in which Juniper’s revenue quadrupled.

Career Highlights

  • Chief Executive Officer of Lookout since March 2014, and Chairman of the Board.
  • Led Lookout’s March 2021 acquisition of CipherCloud, a cloud-native security company.
  • Divested Lookout Life, the consumer mobile security business, to F-Secure in 2023.
  • Sold Lookout’s cloud security business, including its CASB, ZTNA and secure web gateway products, to Fortra in May 2025.
  • Executive Vice President of Worldwide Field Operations at Juniper Networks from 2002 to 2006, a period in which annual revenue grew from $547 million to $2.3 billion.
  • Founder of four technology companies, two of which are named publicly: Unisphere Networks, acquired by Juniper Networks, and Verivue, acquired by Akamai Technologies.
  • Initiated Lookout’s Shecurity programme, which grew into the industry event Day of Shecurity.

Professional Journey

Dolce’s career has run consistently at the intersection of networking, cloud and security, and much of it through companies he founded and then sold into larger platforms. He was Chief Executive Officer of Unisphere Networks, which Juniper Networks acquired, bringing him into Juniper. There he served as Executive Vice President of Worldwide Field Operations from 2002 to 2006, running global sales, marketing and customer service through a period in which the company’s annual revenue grew from $547 million to $2.3 billion.

He then co-founded Verivue and served as its chief executive. Akamai Technologies acquired the company, and Dolce moved to Akamai as Vice President of Carrier Market Development. The pattern across both moves is the same: build a company in the networking infrastructure layer, sell it to an incumbent, and run a business unit inside the acquirer.

In March 2014 he joined Lookout as Chief Executive Officer, succeeding founder John Hering, who became Executive Chairman; Dolce subsequently also took the chairmanship of the board. Lookout at that point was best known as a consumer mobile security app, and much of Dolce’s tenure has been the work of converting that into an enterprise security business.

That conversion initially went through expansion. In March 2021 Lookout acquired CipherCloud, a cloud-native security company, giving it a Security Service Edge offering spanning cloud access security broker, zero trust network access and secure web gateway capability — a bet on the convergence of endpoint and cloud security under a single platform.

The subsequent three years reversed that approach in favour of focus. In 2023 Lookout sold its consumer business, Lookout Life, to F-Secure, exiting the consumer market and going all-in on enterprise and government customers. Then in May 2025 Fortra acquired Lookout’s entire cloud security business, the SSE platform included, in a transaction that followed a March 2024 integration partnership between the two companies around Fortra’s data loss prevention products. Dolce framed the sale as a decision to concentrate on endpoint security, where he saw the strongest growth opportunity, and positioned Fortra as the better long-term owner of the cloud assets.

The result is a materially smaller and more focused Lookout than the company of three years ago, built around mobile endpoint security — the segment where it has the deepest historical strength. Alongside the commercial work, Dolce initiated the company’s Shecurity programme to expand female representation in cybersecurity engineering, which grew beyond Lookout into the industry event Day of Shecurity.
