Jeff Walpole is the founder and CEO of Phase2, a digital experience agency headquartered in Arlington, Virginia. The company has grown to more than 200 architects, engineers, strategists and designers and, unusually for an agency of its age, is still led by the four founders who started it. Walpole sets its strategy, service lines and target markets and has been a long-standing figure in the Drupal community, including service on the Drupal Association board.

Professional Journey
Walpole founded Phase2 in 2001, one of four founders who, the company says, have been with it since the first day. Frank Febbraro, the chief technology officer, is another. Phase2 built its reputation on open-source web platforms, and Drupal in particular. Walpole’s own profile on Drupal.org describes him as a Drupal Association board member and “overall Drupal evangelist”, and the company’s relationship with Acquia, the commercial Drupal company, goes back more than 15 years.
Its client work has included public institutions. In February 2020 Phase2 announced a 10-year web and mobile services contract with the Smithsonian Institution. Walpole called the Smithsonian “one of our country’s most prestigious institutions” and said the firm would bring its experience with global brands and public-sector organisations to the work. In the years since, the company has moved towards healthcare. Phase2 now describes itself as HIPAA specialists and a Business Associate to its clients, and its own materials name enterprise health systems such as Northwell Health, AdventHealth, Michigan Medicine and Tufts Medicine among the organisations it serves. Walpole has appeared in company events on the future of digital healthcare, including a session with Drupal creator Dries Buytaert.
In February 2024 Acquia named Phase2 its Partner of the Year for North America. Walpole said the award reflected the work of the company’s teams and a relationship built over more than 15 years. As CEO he sets the company’s strategic vision, defines its service offerings and target markets, and oversees partnerships, client relationships and the development of the team. The leadership group around him includes COO Nicole Lind and CTO Frank Febbraro. Phase2 credits him with more than 25 years of internet, software and consulting experience on one page and more than 30 years on another.
